Reading Theories
ENGL 295 FA
A survey of modern literary, critical and cultural theories. We shall be emphasizing key concepts--such as language and textuality; identity, subjectivity and gender; power, knowledge, cultural institutions and the
state; and key figures, such as Marx,
Freud, Nietzsche, Saussure, Barthes, Gramsci, Benjamin, Foucault, Althusser, and Jameson, etc.
MAJOR READINGS

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several short papers - 20 pp total.

This course meets the English Department's Theory requirement. COL majors may take this course on a pass-fail basis.
