The Child, the Postcolonial, and the Problem of Authority

Among other effects, imperialism destabilized established routes from youth to adulthood, from ignorance/apprenticeship to knowledge, wisdom, and the authority of age. Imperialism and modernity seem to accord authority to youth, childish ignorance to age. This course will examine construction of childhood and authority.
