This course is a survey of the literary treatment of ethnicity and national identity in the 20th-century U.S., with special attention to the influence of changing social and political contexts.

MAJOR READINGS

Bourne, Cahan, Chin, DiDonato, Dixon, Far, Farrell, Kallen, Kingston, Rolvaag, Speranza, Tan, Yezierska, Zangwill.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two exams, two essays.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
