American Realism

This course will analyze the faithful representation of reality as a political and aesthetic project in the U.S. from the mid-19th century to the 1940s. While primary emphasis will be on fiction, some attention will be paid to painting, photography, and journalism.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings will include works by such authors as Frederick Douglass, Rebecca Harding Davis, Stephen Crane, Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, William Dean Howells, Theodore Dreiser and Ann Petry.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Course assignments will include 15-20 pages of formal essays and a number of informal assignments.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
