20th-Century British Poetry
ENGL 226 SP

Major British poets (Yeats, Eliot, Auden, Thomas, Heaney). A consideration of the post-war scene, expanding notions of "British" poetry. Expatriates (Hill, Gunn), poets who remained (Hughes, Larkin, Reading), contemporary Irish (Mahon, Muldoon) and colonial writers (Murray, Walcott), academics (Fenton, Prynne).

MAJOR READINGS

Yeats, Eliot, Auden, Thomas, Heaney, Hill, Gunn, Muldoon, Larkin, Walcott

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two (7-8 + 14-15 page) or three (7-8 page) papers.
Final exam.

Punctual attendance; engaged participation in class discussion.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
