Fiction Now: Short Stories
ENGL 210 FA

This introduction to the elements of fiction and a range of contemporary styles is for people who want to write or simply to increase their appreciation and understanding of short stories.

MAJOR READINGS

Stories by some of the masters -- Chekhov, Hemingway, Doyle, Bierce, Poe, de Maupassant, -- and by many American contemporaries, including Denis Johnson, Any Bloom, Tobias Wolff, T.C. Boyle, Junot Diaz, Antonya Nelson, and Mary Gaitskell.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

In the first half of the course, weekly short exercises in various elements of fiction. In the second half of the course, biweekly exercises in appreciation and introduction of new fiction. Frequent quizzes and a final exam.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
