Chaucer
ENGL 207 SP
Chaucer wrote in a time of great political and social unrest and linguistic instability, when the status and meaning of secular literature in English was uncertain. This course examines how he fashioned vernacular poetry
by reconfiguring traditional
images and issues to give them meaning and value within his culture.

Shorter readings charting Chaucer's critical fortunes in the centuries after his death.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several quizzes, two short papers and one longer (8-10 pp.) paper.

This course counts toward the English Department's pre-1800 requirement.
