Advanced Fiction Writing
ENGL 169 SP
A workshop on techniques of fiction writing, which will explore a variety of approaches to questions of form and narrative. Among the topics to be considered: the uses of history in fiction; realism, the fantastic and
the absurd; rules and games;
private and public languages, and words with (or against) images.
MAJOR READINGS
Readings will include works by Bachmann, Barthelme, Borges, Calvino, Cortazar, Davenport, Gogol, Kafka, Sebald, Ware and others.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly written assignments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This is a drop/add class. Admission will be on the basis of a short (no longer than 20pp.) sample of your fiction. Submit writing samples to Sheila Kelleher, English Dept. Secretary, 285 Court Street, Middletown, CT
06459-0100 by Wednesday, January 16,
2002.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
