Advanced Fiction Workshop
ENGL 168 FA
For people who have already had an introduction to the techniques of fiction, like Fiction Now (English 210, fall 2000), or another course in fiction writing, and want to continue writing short fiction and having their
work critiqued by other students
and by the instructor. Reading will be tailored to the interests of the class. Students will be expected to read their own work aloud and answer questions about it.
MAJOR READINGS
Collections of short stories and hybrid novels, by authors including Ernest Hemingway, Lorrie Moore, Alice Munro, George Saunders, Milan Kundera, and W.G. Sebald.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Five short stories, revised to perfectionist standards. Perhaps a public reading, at the course's conclusion.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Additional requirements are English 210, English 142, English 165 or another course in fiction writing at Wesleyan.
Contact instructor by e-mail before the first class, stating name, year, major, and how you
fulfilled the requirement.
You
may not take this course and another writing course concurrently, with the exception of a senior thesis tutorial.
Students will add this course during the Drop/Add period.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
