Telling and Storytelling: An Introduction to Writing Creative Non-Fiction
ENGL 153 SP

Members of this seminar will study and practice varieties of creative non-fiction. These will include memoir, the personal essay, the portrait, and the analytic meditation. The students' goal will be to see how the writer employs the personal voice, techniques of narrative, and the rigorous development of ideas to create distinctive non-fiction.

MAJOR READINGS

Lopate, Phillip, ed., THE ART OF THE PERSONAL ESSAY
Roorbach, Bill, ed. CONTEMPORARY CREATIVE NON-FICTION: THE ART OF TRUTH
Zinsser, William. ON WRITING WELL

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Students will be expected to hand in writing assignments for every class meeting, complete written analyses of reading assignments, and revise work as requested by the instructor. There will be no examinations. Instead, students will complete polished pieces in each of the sub-genres studied (e.g., a memoir piece, a profile, etc.).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

No one will be required to read their writing to the group, but willingness to do so will be appreciated. Attendance, on the other hand, is strictly required. Any student with more than three unexcused absences may be dropped from the course at any point during the semester. Any student who does not come to the first class meeting may, in accordance with EPC policy, be dropped from the course.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
