Students in this course will examine the geological and ecological development of the Connecticut River as an example of how rivers both influence and are influenced by humans. Students will measure river properties and collect samples, gaining first-hand experience in scientific data generation and analysis. This course is being introduced as a special topic/first-year initiative to provide students with an opportunity to collect and analyze scientific data and to examine the interaction of hu mans and a particular type of natural environment. Specific topics to be covered include: natural development (geological development, including role of wetlands, hydrology, ecology); human impact (pollution--industrial, agricultural and domestic); ener gy (hydroelectric and nuclear power); habitat (restoration and preservation).
