Antitrust Economics: Regulation by the Market
ECON 224 SP

This course addresses attempts to preserve competitive rivalry in the United States economy. Class discussion centers on examples of governmental intervention through the antitrust statutes (Sherman, Clayton, F.T.C., Robinson-Patman and Cellar-Kefauver acts) on cartels, price-fixing conspiracies, predation, mergers, monopolies, unfair acts and practices, damage calculations, discrimination, tie-in sales and vertical restraints.

MAJOR READINGS

Primarily selected court opinions since 1890.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Written final exam as scheduled by the Registrar. Assignments: Cases assigned daily to be discussed in class. Occasional short papers. Considerable importance to class discussion.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
