American Dance History
DANC 375 SP
This course presents a structuralist survey of approaches to western concert dance from the Middle Ages to the present. Particular emphasis is placed on the orientation to dance of various choreographers--how dance is
conceived, how it is presented and
the nature of the choreographer's role. Projects both written and choreographed are required.
MAJOR READINGS
Deborah Jowitt, TIME AND THE DANCING IMAGE and selected readings
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Research paper, reviews of dance concerts, dance compositions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Interview with professor.
