Spanish Flamenco Dance
DANC 270 SP

This course introduces the fundamentals of the flamenco dance form that emerged from the Gypsy and Andalusian cultures of southern Spain. The course work focuses on the development of flamenco technique through the integration of footwork patterns, arm movements, body attitude, turns, and coordinating dance rhythms and phrasing to musical accompaniment. Emphasis is placed on gaining an understanding of flamenco in its various cultural contexts.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Discussion groups, participation in Introduction to Dance concert. Short papers based on readings & video viewings.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Hard-soled shoes with heels. Women with full skirts. A basic competence in rhythmic dance is a requirement for this class. Acceptance to this class will be determined by audition.

Auditions will be held on Monday, Dec. 11 i n the Pine St. Dance Studio. Students with surnames starting A-L will audition at 10AM and those with surnames starting M-Z at 11AM. Please bring flamenco or character dance shoes if you have them, but bare feet are acceptable for the audition. Results will be posted at the Dance Department by Wednesday, Dec. 13.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
