This course is an examination of romance as a literary genre, primarily in narrative, though dramatic examples will also be presented. Particular attention will be paid to the conventions of romance and their persistence in European and American literature, taking account of definitions of romance by literary theoreticians. The course will emphasize medieval romances, but other works to be read will be drawn from among those of Apuleius, Malory, Ariosto, Shakespeare, Twain, Kafka, Tolkien and su ndry other worthies both famed and forgotten.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
