Academic Year 2001/2002
Don Juan and Faust: The Emergence of Modern European Man?
COL 310 FA
Analyzing different versions of the Don Juan and Faust stories from the 16th century through the 20th, this course will investigate some of the basic ingredients of these mythic characters and address the questions to
what extent--if at all--they might
represent what could be called essential features of Western man. An understanding of the historical conditions of these texts will contextualize their messages, while a modern critical reading will try to unmask some
of their ideological presuppositions
MAJOR READINGS
Tirso de Molina, Moliere, Mozart/Da Ponte Kierkegaard for the Don Juan legend and the chap book, Marlowe, and Goethe for the Faust legend. There will be additional reading on the final reading list.
