This course will cover readings in English translation of lyric poetry--religious, erotic and political--from Saint Ambrose to Petrarch, written in Latin and European vernaculars (Provencal, Old French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portugese, English). Particular attention will be given to the development of lyric forms from classical and other sources and to poetic theory and problems of translation. A reading knowledge of one or more of the original languages will be helpful but is not required.
