The Power of Literature

This course surveys world literature from the Trojan War to World War II (1000 B.C.--2000 A.D.), placing it against some monuments of the Western world's and Eastern world's modern glosses and modern reflections, showing the dynamism and aptness of outstanding literary works, their historical development and philosophical changes, various methods of analysis, and the enduring strength of the skilled imagination.

MAJOR READINGS

ODYSSEY, OEDIPUS THE KING, THE SYMPOSIUM, THE APOLOGY, ANALECTS, JOB, MATTHEW, THE ORIGINS OF THE YOUNG GOD, BEOWULF, THE INFERNO, DON QUIXOTE, HAMLET, THE MASTER AND MARGARITA.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Two short papers, one midterm, one final.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
