Fourth Year Chinese
CHIN 222 SP
This course provides students with intense and ample practice of advanced Chinese with a communicative approach. Both text-based and media-aided, this approach introduces a choice set of contemporary and diverse
situations and topics (e.g. unemployment,
single-parenthood, baby-adoption, media and consumerist culture, etc.). With or without the print text, students can study, discuss and practice on original news broadcasts, TV reportage, scenes from films or TV drama.
Classes will include media
session in the lab, group discussion and oral presentation by students. The course is especially helpful for keeping up students' reading and communicative competence.

Regular quizzes, oral presentations and essay writings and a final exam.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Students who have not taken CHIN218 or courses of comparable proficiency elsewhere need to take a placement exam before being enrolled. This course also caters to students beyond the fourth-year who will be required to
work on supplementary texts
selected from THE INDEPENDENT READER (1997) in addition to the normal course work. This course may be repeated by students who have already taken CHIN221 or CHIN222, as readings will be changed.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
