Society and Culture in Ancient Greece

This course is a modified form of the typical "Great Books" course, in which the major texts from Greek antiquity are read in the context of the social, historical and economic realities of the culture that produced them. The course encompasses readings in all the major genres and lecture and slide presentations on such topics as law, medicine, religion, women and the family, the military and the ancient economy.

MAJOR READINGS

Homer, ILIAD Homer, ODYSSEY Aeschylus, ORESTEIA Sophocles, OEDIPUS, ANTIGONE Euripides, HIPPOLYTUS, BACCHAE Aristophanes, FROGS, LYSISTRATA Plato, REPUBLIC Aristotle, POLITICS, ETHICS Connor, GREEK ORATIONS Hadas, GREEK ROMANCES

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three hour examinations, one after each major section of the course is completed. Each examination will consist of 25 short-answer questions based on the lectures and two short essays based on the readings. For each hour examination, the student may choose to submit a 5 page paper in lieu of the essay section.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This course will normally meet T/Th 2:40-4:00. However, four classes will not meet due to Jewish holidays. To make up for these missed meetings, classes meeting on September 15, 22, 29 and October 6 will run from 2:40-5:30 p.m.
