Historical Narrative

By close reading of some paired works, we will examine how each author has chosen to construct his story (e.g., use of evidence, presentation of themes, depiction of character, authorial intervention, etc.). The selections will probably include Ladurie, MONTAILLOU; Berger, PIG EARTH; Spence, EMPEROR OF CHINA; Huang, A YEAR OF NO SIGNIFICANCE.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Several short (2-3 page) papers and one slightly longer essay (7-10 pages) at the end. No examinations. Strong emphasis on class discussion.

Preference to Classics or Classical Civilization majors.
