This course will study the earliest periods in Greek culture from the perspectives of both archaeology and literature. The archaeological evidence will be examined with a view to constructing a picture of the society and culture of the early Greeks; a close reading of the epic poems of Homer (ILIAD and ODYSSEY) will provide a contrasting portrait of the same era. The topics to be discussed in the course include the date of Homer, the oral vs. written theories of composition, the origins of Greek Art, the historicity of the Trojan War and the transition from the Dark Age to the Archaic Period of Greece.
