The Classical Inheritance
CCIV 276 SP
This course will use readings in 19th-century travel narratives and analysis of 19th-century photographs to examine how travelers and photographers constructed their views of classical Greece and Rome.
MAJOR READINGS
Selections from authors such as Twain, Dickens, Hawthorne, Symonds, Henry James, et al., along with modern critical essays on travel narrative and on photography.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Several short (2-4 pp.) papers and one longer (10-15 pp.) final paper.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a
completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
