In this course we study representations of women in art and literature in the light of ancient Greek socio-cultural practices. We read selections from Hesiod, Homer, the Homeric Hymns, Sappho, Aristotle, and the Hippocratic Corpus, along with works by Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Xenophon, and Plutarch. We learn about laws governing marriage, sexuality, and inheritance; ancient Greek rituals of birth, marriage, and death; Greek festivals celebrating Demeter, Dionysus, and Athena; and various other aspects of ancient Greek public and private life. Through discussion we explore ways in which our knowledge of law and social life can complement or contradict what texts and artistic representations tell us. No previous knowledge of ancient Greek culture is required.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
