The Indian Temple
ARHA 385 FA
Starting with monuments of the Kushan period (1st-2nd century CE), this course traces the architectural evolution of the Indian temple through to its culmination in the South Indian temple cities of the Nayak period
(17th century). The point of
departure is morphological and stylistic analysis of the buildings themselves, which will then fuel discussions on architectural symbolism, the relationship between temple architecture and Hindu ritual, and the social
and political functions of temples.

Permission of instructor. Students must e-mail a statement of one or two paragraphs to the instructor describing their interest. Students are asked to give their class year and major and describe their background in
any prior work in architectural art
history, studio architecture, Asian art and/or coursework in other disciplines relating to India. Statements must be e-mailed to Professor Phillip Wagoner NO LATER THAN MARCH 30, 2000. Professor Wagoner's e-mail is:

Students will be advised of their acceptance via e-mail. Permission of instructor forms will be available in the Art Department office during registration.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's
Office.
