Portraiture in the Italian Renaissance
ARHA 323 FA
This course will examine portraiture in Italian painting and sculpture, c. 1420 - 1570. It will focus on how portraiture supported, shaped and challenged various social, political and cultural structures, particularly
those of artist, patron and
beholder. The course will concentrate on notions of subjectivity and on strategies of self-fashioning within private, corporate, and religious contexts. Other art historical methodologies will include those related to
reception theory, social history,
psychoanalytic theory, formal analysis, and identity politics. Students should therefore be prepared for substantial readings in a range of fields.
