History of Photography

This survey course includes topics on photography from the 1830s to the present, with emphasis on the social uses of the medium, 19th-century documentary, pictorialism, the emergence of modernism, the post-Frank generation, and contemporary trends.

Three short papers, one term paper, midterm examination.

The class is limited to 30.
The class will meet for slide lectures and discussions with original photographs from the Davison Art Center collection.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
