Realism to Modernism: French Painting 1848-1889

This course will explore from a critical perspective painting in France between 1848 and 1889. We will focus mainly upon the work of Courbet, Manet, Degas, Morisot, Cassatt, Monet, Caillebotte, Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne, as well as on photography and popular imagery. Images will be analyzed in relation to such recurrent themes as realism, revolution, gender, race, urbanism, suburbanism, mass culture, and class. We will also consider various art historical methodologies (i.e., feminist, social historical, Marxist, psychoanalytic, formalist, etc.).

MAJOR READINGS

Major readings will include selections from 19TH CENTURY ART: A CRITICAL HISTORY, Stephen F. Eisenman; T.J. Clark PAINTING OF MODERN LIFE; Linda Nochlin WOMEN, ARTS, AND POWER; Robert Herbert IMPRESSIONISM: ART, LEISURE, AND PARISIAN SOCIETY.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Mid-term; 5-page paper; final.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
