The Archaeology of Death

This course will focus on the reconstruction of past lifeways from the information derived from the excavation and analysis of the cemeteries of extinct cultures, for example, social organization, ritual practice, demographics, health and nutrition. Both theoretical and methodological considerations will be emphasized.

MAJOR READINGS

Metcalf and Huntington, CELEBRATIONS OF DEATH, and various reserve readings.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four essays and an oral presentation.
