Drama from the Yuan Dynasty (13th century) to the present will be read and discussed, with special emphasis on the interactions between Chinese and European/American theater styles. These include Bertold Brecht's fascination with Yuan drama and Eugene O'Neill's influence on 20th century Chinese dramaturgy. Interactions between pre-modern, modern and contemporary drama will also be pursued. We will focus intensely on how recent drama draws strength from a venerable tradition. We will also explore som e of the gender implications of female impersonators, all-female drama troops, and related matters. Students who take this course will come away with an insight into dramatic conventions quite different from those on the western stage.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
