Women and Revolution in China
ALIT 222 FA
China's government has changed dramatically over the past century. With each stage of revolution, the position of women has also changed. Using mostly literature and film as sources, the course explores the hopes of
Chinese reformers (male and female)
on behalf of women and the successes and failures (or sites of resistance to change) they have encountered. Tensions between city and country, communists and capitalists, and mainland China and Taiwan will be of
particular interest. Contentious issues
like abortion, breastfeeding, retirement, and marriage resistance will also be considered.
