Introduction to African American Literature
AFAM 129 FA
This course offers an introduction to the cultural production of African Americans from the mid-18th century to the present, with an emphasis on poetry and fiction. We will consider issues of genre, literary
tradition(s), and historical context, while
gaining experience in reading and writing about literary texts.
MAJOR READINGS
THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE
Selected novels.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Weekly discussion questions, short essays, and mid-term and final exams.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
