Academic Year 2000/2001
Conquest and Resistance: A Cultural History of Chiapas
SPAN 269 FA
This course will examine the representation and formation of Chiapas (Mexico) from colonization in the 16th century through to the Zapatista uprising of January 1994. Through the analysis of the sacred book of Mayan
myth, Spanish and indigenous accounts
of conquest, government, and rebellion, 19th-century travel narratives, as well as twentieth century novels, short stories, and essays, the course will construct a critical genealogy of a culturally coherent zone which
has challenged colonial and
national configurations for centuries and is now striving to define itself in the face of globalism.
