Modern Spanish Fiction
SPAN 243 SP
The period 1880-1930 is pivotal in Spanish culture. It is bracketed by the restoration and demise of the monarchy and is characterized by profound social and economic transformation. A correlation may be drawn between
the history of the novel and
cultural history, since the novel undergoes equally profound changes during the same period. We will center our attention on this correlation by treating the novel as a vehicle for representing not reality per se but
rather a mode of understanding reality
. Our ultimate goal is to understand Spain's evolution toward modernity as reflected by this genre.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Three oral presentations; two short papers (3-5 pages); one final research paper involving outside reading on the theory of the novel and on the historical background of the period.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Spanish 243 is intended for students who have completed SPAN223. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before preregistering. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or
communicate directly with the
instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
