Spanish Theater
SPAN 227 SP

A close reading of plays from all periods of Spanish literature. Various critical approaches will be employed for analyzing the relationship between each work and: (1) the genre of dramatic literature; (2) the work's sociohistorical context. The syllabus is organized to emphasize three specific modes of reading theater: (1) In an intrinsic reading we will study the extent to which stage representation is encoded in the written text; (2) an extrinsic reading will focus on dramatic literature as a reflection of society; and (3) through an overview of plays from different periods (the historical perspective) we will analyze how the genre has evolved in Spain in time.
