Spanish Theater
SPAN 227 SP
A close reading of plays from all periods of Spanish literature. Various critical approaches will be employed for analyzing the relationship between each work and: (1) the genre of dramatic literature; (2) the work's
sociohistorical context. The
syllabus is organized to emphasize three specific modes of reading theater: (1) In an intrinsic reading we will study the extent to which stage representation is encoded in the written text; (2) an extrinsic reading
will focus on dramatic literature as a
reflection of society; and (3) through an overview of plays from different periods (the historical perspective) we will analyze how the genre has evolved in Spain in time.

The written assignments amount to three short (2 page) papers and a final essay (10+ pages) reflecting semester-long independant
research. The final grade is based
on this project (roughly 50%), participation in class discussions (20%) and the short papers (30%). All discussions and written work are in Spanish.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS: SPAN233 is
intended
for students who have completed SP
AN223. Students who have
not done so should consult with the professor before
preregistering.
