Introduction to Medieval and Golden Age Spanish Literature
SPAN 224 SP
Close study of great literary texts up to 1700, including epic, parodic, and lyric verse; plays (among them the source of the Don Juan myth); autobiography; and the first picaresque novel. Since these works are
privileged mediators of the major
political, religious, artistic, and gender discourses of their respective moments, we will take into account features that mark the consolidation of Western Europe as we know it: the official use of the vernaculars,
expanded codifications of law, the foun
ding of universities, the printing press, the rise first of a feudal aristocracy and then of cities and nation-states, and the launching of a new global order through conquest and colonization. Attention will be paid to
oral traditions and to the nonliter
ary arts (notably architecture and music), as also to Castille's relations with other Peninsular and European cultures and Christian Spain's with its Muslim and Jewish counterparts.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Four short papers, (2pp.) two longer papers (5pp., 6-8 pp.), one short oral presentation as preparation for the final paper.

Required of majors, but non majors welcome. SPAN224 is intended for students who have completed SPAN221 with the grade of B or better. Students who have not done so should consult with the professor before
preregistrating. Readings, class discussion,
and written work in Spanish only.
Only COL students may take this course CR/U.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
