Introduction to Modern Spanish Literature and Civilization
SPAN 223 FA

Close study of representative Spanish texts in the period 1800 to the present will serve as the basis for a historical survey of modern literary movements.

Part III, The Generations of 98 and 27: Miguel de Unamuno, Antonio Machado, Ramon Maria del Valle Inclan, Federico Garcia Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Luis Cernuda
Part IV, The Post-War Era: Carmen Martin Gaite, Blas de Otero , Gabriel Celaya, Jaime Gil de Biedman, Jose Angel Valente

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Primary assignments include 5-page essays and a final exam.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Required of majors but non-majors are welcome. Readings, class discussion, and written work in Spanish only. This course is intended for students who have completed SPAN 221 with a grade of B- or better or have placed into SPAN 223 through the placement test this fall.
