What kinds of conditions, social settings and cultural contexts prompt people to organize for change? What social factors enable them to mobilize effectively? What kinds of strategies do they employ? The course uses case studies to look at major theories of collective mobilization, including resource mobilization and new social movement theory.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four short essays (2-3 pages) and a research paper, 12-15 pages long.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
