Contemporary Social Theory

This course will critically examine writings of the classic sources of contemporary social theory: Simone de Beauvoir, Martin Luther King, Reinhold Niebuhr, Erving Goffman, C. Wright Mills, Alvin Gouldner, Claude Levi-Strauss, Talcott Parsons.

MAJOR READINGS

Simone de Beauvoir, SECOND SEX C. Wright Mills, SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION Claude Levi-Strauss, TRISTES TROPIQUES Alvin Gouldner, COMING CRISIS IN WESTERN SOCIOLOGY and selections from other authors.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

A major research paper and several shorter essays. Class attendance and participation

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
