This course will critically examine writings of the classic sources of contemporary social theory: Simone de Beauvoir, Martin Luther King, Reinhold Niebuhr, Erving Goffman, C. Wright Mills, Alvin Gouldner, Claude
Levi-Strauss, Talcott Parsons.
MAJOR READINGS
Simone de Beauvoir, SECOND SEX C. Wright Mills, SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION Claude Levi-Strauss, TRISTES TROPIQUES Alvin Gouldner, COMING CRISIS IN WESTERN SOCIOLOGY and selections from other authors.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
A major research paper and several shorter essays. Class attendance and participation
