This course will trace the development of Nabokov's art from its origins in Russian literature by close readings of the motifs that spiral outward through his (principally English-language) novels.

Nabokov's translation and commentary to EUGENE ONEGIN, INVITATION TO A BEHEADING, DESPAIR, THE REAL LIFE OF SEBASTIAN KNIGHT, PNIN, SPEAK, MEMORY, THE GIFT, LOLITA, PALE FIRE, "The Vane Sisters", "Signs and Symbols"

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

One or two class presentations; one parody; term paper.
