Pushkin's poetry brilliantly reflects the expressive potential of the Russian language. In its play with contemporary genres and styles, it also establishes Russian literature's central role in defining and redefining Russian culture. This course will read Pushkin both ways: as the "Pushkin-tour" of the Russian language's expressive potential and as Pushkin's creative articulation of Russian culture in the 1820s and 1830s. All readings will be conducted in Russian. Lectures and discussions will be in Russian and English.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Translation quizzes, four short papers; (two of which will be presented to the class in Russian), final exam.

Even if you are not pre-enrolled in this class, come to the first class and the instructor will sign your add slip. There is no need to talk to the instructor in advance; all students will be admitted.
