This course intends to put students in conversation with many classical sources of philosophy, narrative, scriptural exegesis, liturgy, law, and mysticism from the Jewish tradition. The social circumstances of the Jews who produce these works, as well as the ways these texts have shaped a variety of Jewish social identities and differing Judaisms, will be explored using the academic tools of humanistic and social scientific studies.
Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
