The Dramaturgical Approach in Psychology
PSYC 363 SP

The objective of this course is to explore the use of the language of theater in the illumination of psychological questions. Material for the course will be about half drama, half readings from social psychology. Among the issues to be explored are politics as theater, audience effects, role-playing as a teaching and therapeutic technique, the actor's identity problems and general theory of the mask.

MAJOR READINGS

One book per week, either a play or a work from social psychology. Among the authors included will be Albee, Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Rostand, Shaffer and Goffman.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Each student will participate in the planning of at least two classes and will make presentations in those classes. A final paper is required, as well as a weekly journal.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

This is a specialized course in the study area of Social Psychology. A background or interest in theater is desirable; theater or dance majors who have had introductory psychology are welcome; an attempt will be made to achieve a balance between male and female students. By interview.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
