The Aesthetic Formation of Experience

This seminar will explore the dynamics of experience from a philosophical standpoint. A series of relevant texts in modern continental European and American philosophy will be closely studied and critically discussed. Members of the seminar will develop their own points of view on issues arising from these texts, through discussion, class presentations, and essays.

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

There will be class presentations and several short papers through the term, plus a 10-15 pp. paper reflecting an independent project due during exam week.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students are advised to enroll in the seminar only if they already have a substantial philosophical background, including at least two 200-level courses. If in doubt, it would be well to confer with the instructor in advance.

This course fulfills a Critical Theory requirement for Religion majors.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
