A Philosophical Survey of Mimesis

This course will be an intensive consideration of primary texts that offer theories regarding the nature of mimesis (imitation).

Excerpts from: Plato, Aristotle, Edmund Burke, Lessing, Winckelmann, Diderot, Hogarth, Oscar Wilde, Clement Greenberg

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Three (5-7 pp.) essays on course readings.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
