Philosophy of Religion

Topics vary from year to year. The topic for Spring 2001, Believing and Doubting, will include philosophical explorations of selected problems in religious thought. There will be a close reading of a few substantial texts, some classical, some post-Kantian, with the aim of stimulating a critical, constructive pursuit of the problems themselves in papers and discussion.

MAJOR READINGS

Readings vary from year to year. Readings for Spring 2001 will include: Anselm, PROSLOGION
Kant, RELIGION WITHIN THE LIMITS OF REASON ALONE
Hume, DIALOGUES CONCERNING NATURAL RELIGION
Kierkegaard, PHILOSOPHICAL FRAGMENTS
Nietzsche, THE GAY SCIENCE

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Four 3-5 page papers will be assigned over the course of the term.

Students are advised to elect this course only if they have had some previous course, or the equivalent, in philosophy. This course is also listed as RELI291. Preference to religion and philosophy majors. This course fulfills a "Critical Disciplines" requirement for the Religion Department major.

Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
