Mencius
PHIL 280 SP
This course includes a close reading of the early Confucian classic MENCIUS and an introduction to contemporary debate over the text's interpretation. The aim of the course will be to introduce students to the Chinese
philosophical tradition through an
important and influential text, and also to reflect critically upon how one does philosophy cross-culturally and in translation.
MAJOR READINGS
MENCIUS, in translation, and various contemporary secondary works.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Four papers will be required: two brief expositions of a position or argument and two longer, critical discussions.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
Thorough familiarity with each day's readings and class participation are expected. No prior knowledge of Chinese philosophy will be assumed, though Philosophy 205 (Classical Chinese Philosophy) provides helpful
background. Unless preregistered
students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the
Registrar's Office.
