Music of Duke Ellington
MUSC 395 SP
This course is an intensive study of composer, pianist, cultural icon Duke Ellington in recognition of the centennial anniversary of his birth. Extensive lecture, listening, reading and discussion will present an
overview of Ellington's work and life in
a cultural context.
MAJOR READINGS
Music is My Mistress by Duke Ellington, Duke Ellington Jazz Composer by Ken Rattenbury, Early Jazz by Gunther Schuller and several other publications.
EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS
Regular classroom assignments as well as a final research paper. Familiarity with technical musical vocabulary is helpful but a genuine interest in the subject is most prerequisite.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS
This course is being offered in recognition of the centenniary of Ellington's birth. It completely and coherently supports the African American component of the music department by nature of subject matter and
presentation format. Unless
preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed
Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
