Music of India: The Hindusthani (North Indian) Tradition
MUSC 314 FA

The course will focus on learning and applying the principles of Raga (modal composition and improvisation) and Tala (cyclical time frame). In addition, the cultural context of art, popular, and folk music, their performance practice and oral transmission, will be examined.

MAJOR READINGS

Bonnie C. Wade, MUSIC IN INDIA: THE CLASSICAL TRADITIONS. Assorted articles, journals and reference works will be assigned occasionally, not to exceed 30 pages per week. Sound recordings and video-tapes will also constitute important "texts."

EXAMINATIONS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Weekly 2-3 page papers. Attendance at a minimum of three concerts during the semester.
