The Art Song
MUSC 225 SP

This course is an investigation in-depth of settings by major composers of major poets: Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Wolf songs on texts of Goethe, Schiller, Heine and Moerike; and Faure, Debussy, Duparc and Poulenc settings of Hugo, Gautier, Verlaine, Baudelaire and Apollinaire. For contrast, some songs by English and American composers will be studied, particularly selected pieces by Ives and Sullivan, as well as Continental composers who represent a different approach to the song, such as Mahler, Schoenberg, Boulez, Berio and Bellini.

MAJOR READINGS

Scores of songs--among others, settings of Schubert and texts of Goethe.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS and/or COMMENTS

Students must be able to read music. A good background in theory is desirable, but the instructor is willing to have dedicated students who do not have it. By interview. Unless preregistered students attend the first class meeting or communicate directly with the instructor prior to the first class, they will be dropped from the class list. NOTE: Students must still submit a completed Drop/Add form to the Registrar's Office.
